Winter happens fast, and colder weather will have an impact on your home. Winter storms can batter your exterior, and icy temperatures can make it pretty chilly indoors.
If you want to stay comfortable this season, winterize your home. Winterizing your home will keep the cold air out. It will also help protect your home, lower your utility bills and make things a little safer.
Check the Attic
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), 90% of homes have less attic insulation than they should. In most cases, the EPA recommends using appropriate R38 insulation (insulation at least 10 to 14 inches thick). You’ll want to make sure you distribute it evenly and caulk any gaps. Top things off by placing an insulated cover over your stairway, and you’ll be much cozier.
Seal Your Exterior
It’s natural for homes to shift and materials to flex. When they do, staying on top of them will eliminate drafts and prevent water damage. Grab an appropriate caulk or weather sealant and seal all the cracks, gaps and seams along your home exterior. Particular spots to check include all around your windows and where your home siding meets your foundation. For larger spaces, an expanding foam is often the right material for the job.
Upgrade Your Windows
The average homeowner spends 42% of annual utility costs keeping the house comfortable. Insulated windows can help you lower that number significantly. Windows with inadequate insulation can bleed up to 30% of your home heat due to thermal transfer. New windows will keep more heat in to eliminate those losses. They’ll also add to your curb appeal, help lower you energy bills and muffle sounds traveling in and out of the home.
Prep Your Lawn, Garden and Deck
Patios, decks, gardens and landscapes all need a once-over before it gets too cold. Get yours ready by:
- Trimming overgrowth: Trim back any overgrowth that could interfere with power lines or cause property damage during storms.
- Disconnecting plumbing: Run your hoses dry and disconnect them from the house. Store them in a dry place and cover the faucet.
- Cleaning the deck: If you have a deck, clean it using the recommended method. Make any repairs now so to prevent them from getting any worse.
- Checking your drainage: Clean your gutters and check to ensure the downspouts are clear. Make sure you direct the water so it moves away from your house.
Inspect the Walkway
Winter means wet weather, and that means an increase in slip and fall hazards. If your home has any stairs or sloped surfaces outside, make sure they’re safe. If someone falls and gets injured on your property, it can lead to serious liability issues. Now might be a good time to replace your old concrete staircase, install new handrails or renovate your front porch and steps.
